in this BBC article it sounds like Apple are now getting the same treatment as Microsoft in regards to using their powers in the market place.

In this case Apple is forcing people who download music from its itunes service to play their music only on ipods.

An itunes user is suing apply saying:

"Apple has unlawfully bundled, tied, and/or leveraged its monopoly in the market for the sale of legal online digital music recordings to thwart competition in the separate market for portable hard drive digital music players, and vice-versa,"

They have a good point, I also think that apple starts to have his own monopoly now

I belive there is DRM that prevents you from converting files bought from itunes. Didn't Apple violate an agreement between them and the Beatles - the Beatles had a company named Apple as well but they agree not to go into the computing business if Apple Computers didn't go into the music industry?

if the company is dissolved the deal needs no longer be honoured though, right?

regardless....... I think it's good Apple gets sued (much like M$ might I add), isn't it cross platform and cross device all over compatibility that we all want?

In an ideal world, yes! But look how difficult it is for the average 'joe' to get software, games, hardware etc. working on a 'standard' (is there such a thing?) PC with the billions of different manufacturers, drivers, set-ups etc. out there.

At least with a Mac 99% of things work when you install/plug them in.

Also, no one is forced to buy an iPod to listen to music purchased from iTMS, it is the easiest option, but nobody is stopping this guy listening to the music on his computer, streaming it via Airport Express to any hi-fi in his house, or burning a CD from iTunes to listen elsewhere!!

Also, no one is forcing him to buy music from the iTMS, there are many other download sites available. It was his choice to choose iTMS.

It's quite amusing that Microsoft, which has been successfully convicted of monopolistic practices is also complaining about Apple's 87% share of the digital music market!!

I might sue Sony/Philips for 'forcing' me to buy a CD player to listen to music I purchased on CD that won't play on my old tape cassette player!!

I think the problem is that nowhere on the site it says that you can listen the purchased music on other music players ( saw this on an other forum ).

Well, on http://www.apple.com/itunes/store/ it clearly says:

Quote:
You can burn individual songs onto an unlimited number of CDs for your personal use, listen to songs on an unlimited number of iPods and play songs on up to five Macintosh computers or Windows PCs.

Well it doesn't say that you can listen it on other mp3 players
