Any thoughts as to the sound quality of an ipod vs the P910?

I did a test with a friend: we used the same CD as an original source, and compared her ipod mini with my P910, using the same headphones (Sony MDR-EX71SL).

We did three blind tests each (so the listener didn't know which device they were hearing and the tester selected the device "randomly").

Results:

- Both of us consistently identified a difference in sound quality;

- Both of us managed to distinguish the two sources (i.e. we could tell whether test number x was using the same source as test x-1);

- Both of us perceived better sound quality from what turned out to be... the P910.

p.s. Note this comparison is about sound quality, not capacity, portability, integration or how wonderful/awful itunes is.

I have posted before about the good sound quality of the P910. I also use the Sony EX71SLBs. The Nokia 9500 & 7710 has better bass reproduction. But using Unreaplayer with OGG files @ 128kbps I think the P910 is fantastic/unbeatable!

I totally agree.

The ipod is a bloody nightmare to get to sound correct. You have to normalise files at 89Db to avoid distortion, EU boost them up again to get enough volume, set the EQ and it's a major piss about.

One click with DB Poweramp and they're converted to Ogg, transfer to MSDuo and on the P910.

I have replaced the "heads" on my SE headset with Sennheiser HD25 ones and the sound quality with Unreal Player is unbeatable.

With 273 songs @64K Ogg on my phone, who needs a bloody ipod anyway?

Aahhhh, that's all very well, but how do you listen to 5000 songs with a battery that lasts 5 hours?????

Good in theory, but not only does the P series sound better, but you can also swap batteries, use a USB charger etc. The ipod is just too restricted power ways for me too.

I've just bought a 40GB iPod photo, which claims to have 15 hours batt life (though I haven't yet tested it).

Even if it's vaguely accurate, it will come fairly close to the 24 hours I currently get from my P910i, which would be very quickly reduced if I listened to much music on it (already use GPRS and BT fairly heavily).

Of course you can't listen to 5,000 songs in 5 hours, or 50 hours for that matter, though if you apply that principle to all digital music players, none of them are worthwhile, whereas the attraction is having the ability to choose from any of those 5,000, as oppose to the limited choice of 200-300 (and that's at a pretty low bit-rate).

That said, for something as multi-talented as the P910i, I agree that it's MP3 capabilities are pretty impressive. It's nice to see that the "jack of all trades, master of none" reputation of some earlier smartphones certainly doesn't apply here!

Hmm... that's very interesting to hear! That means that it's the included headphones on the P910 that sound like crap and not the P910 (or the other P-series phones) itself!

Get unreal player here: www.pockettorch.ru - new updated version due soon

Yes, the SE headphones are pants. All you need to do is open the buds, unsolder them and replace with better ones. The Sennheiser ones come apart to let you solder them on to the SE headset cables.

Fantastic sound, and you can pick up the Sennheiser ones for a tenner !!!!
