Hello,

I've got a V800 and used the included file manager a lot, but since there are several problems with it, does anybody know if there is a j2me/midp file manager in existence?

My problems:
- I can't delete a file that starts with a . (those files are generated en masse when transfering stuff from the mac)
- I can't really browse to every place in my phone (like internal storage etc.)
- Can't delete/replace files that are protected (like all those pesky Vodafone Live stuff). Those files are most likely not really protected, but just have a "lock" flag set that the included file manager respects no matter what.

I've searched the web for about 4 hours now and I haven't come up with any alternative file manager that is compatible with the V800 (=is j2me/midp). Lots of Symbian stuff, though.

So, the question is
- Does anybody know of such an app?

Bonus questions:
- Where are the best places to look for this stuff? Is there a comprehensive j2me portal somewhere? Are there other boards beside esato where people might now the answer?

How can you be so sure? Did you visit every page of the internet?

And why doesn't somebody create one? This looks like a gap in the market..?

These "limitations" are part of the firmware - this cannot be altered/overriden by a j2me app. To change that you would need to upload a new/altered firmware to the phone.

To create apps that can do things like that you need an open OS like symbian or Windows mobile.

I understand. But then then you could never have "real" applications on a V800 like you can have on a Symbian, right? You can never have a Java app that edits your newly shot pictures or edits your videos. All java apps are basically caught in a "play-pen" where they can do nothing serious except entertain the user and interact with the internet, right? Well this sucks! If this is really true I'm probably gonna sell my V800 and buy a Nokia...

Actually, java itself is a quite powerfull programming language. If the firmware in the phone permits it, java apps can do almost anything as far as i know.

Its not a smartphone - never was advertised as one - its a standard type of phone like thousands others, including nokias and all other brands.

Only smartphones offer the possibility of creating advanced applications - this is why they are called smartphones and the reason they were invented. Not all nokias are smartphones, only the ones based on series60 - which is inferior to the P910

If you need a smartphone have a look at the P910.

Sorry, didn't want to hurt anybody. "Suck" is too strong a word, I just hoped there would be no limit to what this thing can do

My main wishes for a phone are weight, long battery life, mac compatibility followed by good camera, app diversity, play mp3s and 3G. The 900 is too heavy for me while Nokias can't synch with Macs easily, so I think that for me, the V800 is still the best choice.

I just think it's funny that Nokias in the same price/weight class have access to such goodies as an opera browser (which reformats pages on-the-fly for small displays, automatically hiding navigation bars etc.) and video editing (Nokia 6630). But I'm okay with the stuff that SE does better. Kinda
