How much of the software on your phone (that you have added to the original setup) did you actually pay money for?

Well, its not like Microsoft software where you have to pay a lot of money to use it. Most of the UIQ software is not expensive and it is really worth the money you have to pay.
So yes, i hope these programmers make a lot more of this software and i support that by buying it.

Most of the software is massively overpriced, there are a few exceptions but most developers seem to be tripping, charging 10 or 20 quid for apps which should be under a fiver. Ifthey charged less i think more ppl would register and they'd probably be better off This message was posted from a P910

Aled, on what basis "should" they be under a fiver? I was thinking about your comment and I was wondering how you could benchmark the price of a piece of software for the P9.

A paperback book costs about £7. A CD costs about £8-£9 if you buy online. A DVD is about £10. Microsoft Office Pro costs about £300. Well, yes, forget about that, but presumably a fair bit of effort goes into writing the symbian/uiq tools that we enjoy?

I for one would certainly rather pay £14.99 not £4.99 if it meant better support, more frequent maintenance releases/patches/fixes and a shorter development cycle for the next version. After all, that's not even a chart DVD on the high street.

For me, off the top of my head, I think its about 60/40 ratio Paid/Free.

I generally tend to buy good Shareware/Trialware based on the simple principle that if the developer is willing to trust me to have full access to his product, if I like it I should pay.

I also believe that Shareware/Trialware is the best example of fair competition.

I despise the commercial type products that produce bullsh*t glossy pamphlets and glowing testimonials on ther websites and on the basis of that alone you are expected to shell out around anywhere between £50 - £300 only to be told that if you open the packaging (or use the product) there can be no refunds because of piracy issues bla bla bla.

You then buy the product only to find it constantly crashes important programs on your device (pc, smartphone or whatever).

This is the kind of bullsh*t sales model beloved of the likes of Microsoft.

No one buys anything - unless they are mad - costing hundreds of pounds unless they are able to try it out or there is a get out clause. So I don't see why software houses seem to think they are different and that they should be able to force customers into a "take it or leave it" situation "and if you gamble and take it and it doesn't work or our product is sh*t well, tough!". So I have no sympathy for these types of company when their products get copied/pirated.

I am a great fan of Shareware, with nearly everything on my pc being Shareware or Freeware. In fact I can hardly think of a single piece of software on my pc that is ordinary "take it or leave it - no try before you buy" stuff.

As to the price of software on our Pxxx series phones. Well, yes I do think some companies have lost the plot a bit. I think they have got in mind the pc market - where prices are too high in many cases anyway - and have gone a little mad. Some apps - which are really applets coz they are so small or do minimal functions - are selling for like $30 which is way too much.

But having said that, we are lucky in the Symbian community in that the culture here is that nearly all products are sold on a "try before you buy basis"

I also think, where we have Freeware that we find useful we should make a small voluntary donation to the developer as a thank you - even if we only do it at Christmas or some other time.

Oh, in answer to the title of this thread, I don't necessarily think P9xx users are free loaders - well certainly not more than any other community (e.g. people downloading pirated MP3 albums off the net to their pc)
