EDGE is sort of half way between 2.5 g and 3 g. The different is in the transfer speed. 2.5 is around 56 kbps, Edge is around maybe 150 to 345 kbps and I think 2 mbps maximum for 3 g at the moment. Hope that answer your question.

EDGE uses the GSM network.

3G uses another kind of network:

- GSM in Europe is at 900MHz or 1800MHz, 3G (UMTS) is at 2.1GHz
- GSM uses TDMA, different flavors of 3G uses different flavors of CDMA (for UMTS in Europe, it's called W-CDMA).

Cdma is code division multiple access. As far as i know it is an upgrade from amps. Widely used in usa. While europe and asia use gsm. This message was posted from a Nokia

@EastCoastStar

From what I have read on American mobile phone forums, there seems to be a rather strong element in support of CDMA. One chap went so far as to say that GSM wasn't actually a world standard!

The debate then moved on to discussing, which standard, WCDMA or CDMA2000 would becaome the global 3G standard. Needless to say that the CDMA supporters were not in favour of WCDMA; one could almost hear the cries of "Long live Qualcomm!"
