While Nokia's 7650 has become well-known for its picture-taking capabilities, Hantro has taken it a step further and shown a proof-of-concept application that records video.
Hantro Products has tuned up the Nokia 7650 by enabling it to record videos via the integrated camera - sadly for 7650 owners, though, only as a proof of concept. The software was written in ANSI C, which makes it easily portable to almost any operating system, and has previously also run on the Palm OS platform.
Hantro's core offering consists of hardware codecs, software codecs as well as modules that aim to enable quick implementation of applications such as messaging, streaming and videotelephony. The demo software that video-enabled the Nokia 7650 is an example of an application which has been built using Hantro's software codecs and modules, and while consumers are not direct customers of Hantro, the company would likely not oppose semiconductor vendors, OEM manufacturers and potentially also carriers approaching them to add these capabilities to their devices.
The software, which runs directly on Symbian OS, enables the user to record a video clip by using the camera that is integrated in the Nokia 7650. The recorded video clip can be stored in the handset or wirelessly sent directly from the phone as an e-mail attachment or using MMS.
Using standardized MPEG-4 video encoding and decoding, video clips created by the application in Nokia 7650 are guaranteed to be compatible with MPEG-4 decoding applications on a PC or other platforms. To ensure the compatibility of its technology, Hantro has been participating in the interoperability work and testing of the International Multimedia Telecommunications Consortium and the MPEG-4 Industry Forum.
In its product portfolio, Hantro provides customers with MPEG-4 and H.263 compatible real-time video codecs that scale from lower resolutions and frame rates up to CIF (352 x 288 pixels) resolution with 30 frames per second.
When asked about the performance of the 7650 application, Tomas Myntti, Hantro's Vice President of Marketing & Sales said it currently performs at about 10 frames/second with QQVGA resolution (160 x 120 pixels). "Depending on the content of the video (little or much movement, many colours etc.) a 10-30 second clip takes about 60-250 Kb, but that varies a lot. Currently, the demo we show only contains video, not audio. Adding audio is in the plans.", he added.
With currently announced prices by German carrier T-Mobile listing 0.99 EUR for an MMS message of up to 100 Kb in size, the application could theoretically allow a 7650 user to record a short clip and embed it in an MMS message for transfer on the T-Mobile network, while longer clips would have to resort to e-mail as a means of transfer.
