many old cars are still made in china.
is it the same for phones old ones get sold in poorer countries still?

Jolly good question! As far as I am aware, refurbished handsets are often sold off to networks in developing countries because they are not only cheaper for the networks in such countries to buy, but they are also cheaper for the customers too. I seem to recall reading something about most mobiles in Africa being refurbished European models. It isn't an area I have looked into very much, but it is very interesting all the same.

i would think that the cost of producing something like a T39 should be very low, probably even lower than a T100, but with a much better feature set. it would therefore lower the entry point in a manufacturer's model line.

It all depends on how they engineer the phones. It may very well be that the newer phones are cheaper to make than the older because of improved manufacturing processes and improved design. Also some older parts might become more expensive because they are harder to find. They would also have to keep production lines online that they might need for newer phones. Refurbishing is a totally different kind of process.
I think it has to be that they refurbish them and have a massive aftermarket for those, given the high price you still can get for your old phone if you turn it in when buying a new one. Most phones still work fine when they are put to rest in our spoiled world.

I'd say undeveloped is much harsher than poorer. I think 'developing' is a more generally accepted term.

It's pointless arguing over semantics here, there's no hiding the fact that some countries are poorer than others, regardless of what wording you use. I'm politically INcorrect and proud of it (although not to the point of course of being offensive!)
Anyways, getting off topic here. I imagine there are a lot of unused phones in the developed/western/whatever world, that work perfectly but are just deemed to be 'obselete', out of date. These must either sit gathering dust, get sold on Ebay, given to a relative or kept as a spare mobile. There are now springing up in charity shops etc. boxes where people can put mobiles to be 'recycled', and now sent to areas affected by the Tsunami.

hello everyone... at Vodafone i can tell u that ne fones handed in at the point of a sale are returned to a company called fone bac... once there they r tested and if useable sent off to various 'less developed' networks in 'under' developed countries for re-sale... plus for every fone u hand into a vodafone store they give £7 to NAS (National Autistic Society) AnD vodafone match that with another £7 making it £14 in total to NAS...
If the fone cant be re-used then it is recycled and sold on as components like plastic, glass (makes up a lot of the fone in silicon form) and metals...
Its all very posh an a good way to support charities if u dont want to donate money directly plus it helps the environment.
