Nope, no idea... But I hope it runs on a different frequency (not 2.4ghz) to the 802.11b and g protocols. Too much interference there.

I've done quite a bit of reading on wifi lately and read through alot of stuff on the ieee pages. 802.11n is an extension of the 802.11g standard improving speed from 54mbits/sec to 100mbits/sec. Its a requirement that its backwards compatible with existing 802.11b and g and therefore is on the same frequency band but its not due for ratification until near the end of next year

from what I have read the 802.11g standard provides up to 54mbits/sec but in reality throughput is on average half that whereas 802.11n is aimed to provide the 100mbits/sec all the time and so will at least double but probably quadruple the existing 802.11g throughput

This is what it looks like on my box most of the time
It fluctuates between 30 - 54 but most of the time it gives excellent performance!
I do hope 3Com will provide BIOS flashes for my router when the time comes to upgrade to new standard..
I had a Sportster modem before that i upgraded two or three times to new standards/spec, and i have so far been very impressed with 3Com products

I think you'll find thats your connection speed not your throughput speed. The connection speed is determined at initial handshaking time depending on the signal strength, which itself is dependant on range, obstacles etc etc, and other criteria and it is constantly re-evaluated in case any of those criteria change,such as you moving around the house or office etc

you will notice that it says 54mbps even when you are doing nothing over the network and also consider that most broadband connections these days are 1/2, 1 or 2mbps connections (although there are limited 4, 6 and up to 10mbps in some cities/countries) and you can see that while using the internet itself you will never achieve 54mbps. Those speeds are only downstream too and upstream speed are usually quite a bit less

Indeed the only way you could achieve that 54mbps is data transfer from one pc to another within the wifi network

Even then, it doesn't get there. I have a 802.11g network set up, and from 2 laptops right near the access point, both 802.11g compatible, the transfer speed is somwhere around. Same thing occurs with 802.11b, except at 6 rather than 11. The 100mbps will be great, as thats the same speed as an ethernet cable, and if its more consistent, then we won't have those annoying situations where you almost finish a download and the wireless network drops...

@masseur
Of course i was referring to the speed router - PC -another PC on LAN..sorry WLAN
I know full well that the bottleneck is on the WAN-side of the router
Still, i get respectable WLAN performance

It said thet 802.11N has a much GREATER RANGE than 11.G but that might be due to the bi-directional ariels on the router..

I think alltogether N is going to be way better than G
