NOKIA POINTS AND SHOOTS

HELSINKI, Finland (Reuters) -
Nokia's 7650 imaging phone has been well received by Finnish retailers desperate for new devices, but they also say the high price could hurt sales.

It is the size of a standard pocket camera, the weight of a television remote control and is equipped with a matchbox-sized high-resolution color display.

While the phone is larger than those from rivals on sale in Japan, it is easy to use. The 7650 has a screen that covers most of the phone and a joystick to navigate through screen menus more easily than button-based navigation. Underneath the cover rests a small keypad, which slides out for typing numbers and letters.

Sending a picture, with a text or a sound, is fairly easy.

Nokia's new model is superior to the alternative offered by Sony Ericsson, the tiny T68i phone, which sells for about $630. Yet neither camera has a built-in flash, and moving images are blurred. These cameras take something akin to Polaroid snapshots instead of lasting mementos.

Another catch is that a digital picture and audio can only be sent to users with MMS-capable devices and to users who subscribe to a carrier that runs MMS technology, complicating the growth of picture-swapping in the near-term.

By contrast, digital cameras are now selling for little more than $100 that offer more or less similar quality digital photos that can be shared via e-mail.

780 us dollars n7650 is quite expensive and by the release of their own 7210 and 6610, they will compete each other! This post was posted from a T65

I agree, it's not so expensive. Though it's really not cheap.

Remember also how much the T68 (and T68i) were charged!!! Sky-high prices for just a small color screen (I mean you can get a very similar phone, feature-wise for less). But the hype created by this colour screen made people buy it.

Now the same will most likely happen here. It is a relatively small device, with a very large color screen and oh embedded camera. This will sell well, no matter of the price. And it's the very first phone of a new concept for GSM markets. If the concept is accepted by the market, it will sell, if not... well, shit happens, but I wouldn't expect so
The P800 will be in the same price category as 7650 or maybe higher (or lower, but that's unlikely), and look how many of you guys are ready to buy it It does mean there is a market for such devices right?

And the fact is the more popular a phone is, the higher the price you can put on it relatively to the phone category. The less popular it is, the lower the price. Just look as how much the Samsung SGH-T100 is charged. It's a best seller, more expensive than T68i and not much less expensive than the 7650 after all.

Now, when a new device is launched, the price is usually rather high, and after a couple of months or just a few weeks, it has already dropped rather much.

One more thing.
This Reuters article is sooo misleading. Of course you can't just send the pictures via MMS. You can do it via email as well, like on the T68i. Again, these journalists should take a few lessons before writing bullshit.

I've tried out the 7650 and P-800,..and yes, theres a market for those sort of phones.
You cant really compare it to P-800,..this is a full-scale communicator, with e.g. word, pdf, excel, touch-screen and so on.
Feature-wise the P-800 is also stronger,..memory stick, mp3, bluetooth audio and so on. Also uses a newer version of Symbian.

It would be just as misleading to compare 7650 with T68i,..than to compare 7650 to P-800.

The price of the P-800 will surely be higher than 7650. But then again, they are not alike.
7650 here in DK,.is only about 1000 dk.kr more than T68i.

The 7650 is, for now, in a league of its own,..there's no phones to compare it with.
P-800 is another sort of pda-phone.

I dont see the prices on 7650 being that high,..actually not that expensive really
I think it will sell quite good,..but these bigger/heavier combi-phones like 7650 and P-800, are not for everyone to buy.
An e.g. business-man who carries around a case anyway,..will surely use a phone like the 7650. Also people who find the 9210 too big.


I quite like the 7650,..and I dont find it "enormously big",..and the weight doesnt frighten me neither
Symbian works fast,..and the 7650 seems to work fine,..built-quality also felt good.
The only "lack" for me, is the missing headset profile. I know that when I spoke to Nokia in Amsterdam,..they said, that this could came later on,..and I hope it does.
Reason is,.when You're using a phone this size,..also in a car,..then it would be very smart, if you were able to put the phone away, and use a headset,..no wires attached !
In a lot of countries you're not allowed to speak, if one doesnt use handsfree.

All in all,..it seems like a nice phone

Ahh but it doesn't matter how much it costs in US$ because it doesn't work on US GSM networks. Forget you nokia!

Yeah I think a Bluetooth headset profile is very important on a phone this size, it's not the sort of thing you want to have in your pocket, so if you can leave it in your bag and still use it then it's ideal. I really like both the 7650 and the P800, will have to have both.
