Sony Ericsson to expand range

Mobile phone manufacturer Sony Ericsson is set to extend the range of products it offers with a specific focus on the cheaper end of the market.
The company, which is the sixth largest in the sector in the world, unveiled its plans as it reported strong fourth quarter results for 2004.
The move will see competition at the budget end of the mobile phone sector get even more fierce, with both Siemens and Nokia scrapping for an increase in market share.
It is understood that Sony Ericsson gained extra confidence from the success of its third generation (3G) phones, which have proved to be popular. The company believes that, by the end of next year, worldwide sales of its 3G handsets will double and take about ten per cent of the market share.
Targeting the lower end of the mobile phone market marks a change in direction for the company, as it had based its previous success on handsets with cameras that had been aimed at the mid and top end of the sector.

Well, according to The Register, Seimens mobile division is up for sale, and will be closed if a last minute buyer can't be found.
Maybe SE see an opportunity there...?

It will help them to increase the market share , and more (very much id say ) low end phones are sold here in india , where nokia have a huge marketshare , now i think the scenerio will change .

SE has focused on high and mid end phones in the past years. they'll keep focusing on that. but now they'll also add more low end phones to have a wider range of custumors. there isn't much profit in low end phones, but there is a lot of marketshare.
like siemens, siemens main marketshare comes from low end phones, but there's not much profit in it, thats why siemens is doing so bad.

I only hope cheaper phones don't mean lousy plastics and (especially) buggy software. We have enough bugs in the high-end bracket already.
