A couple of times recently I have had strange alerts on my phone. Though nothing appears on the screen.
When I check my "sounds & alerts" on the control panel it appears that they were either "Area Info" or "Auto Set-up".
Anybody any idea why this should be happening and what the hell these to facilities are?

These could be WAP push sms... these don't display any visual alert but do have an audio one. If you go into the default browser you should see a prompt pop up if this is what it is.
Hope this helps,

Auto setup usually when you ask for setting up email settings, mms, ect.... to be sent to you via sms. Area info gives you info on cell towers in your areas (if this features is supported withh your carrier.

I also suspect it is most likely a WAP Push message

Its an alert that I rarely hear and I recognised it because those alerts that I use regularly have been personalised by myself.
The 2 alerts I have mentioned were the only 2 still set as default and when I listened were the alert that I had heard.
They were not WAP Push as there were no unread messages on the messages menu.
Just what are "Area info" and "Auto set-up" ?

When Area Info is ticked, the STD code of the area you are in will display under the operator logo in FC mode.
The other option is for when your network provide "Other" services, I dunno like local news reports or traffic etc... IF your network supports these then you would key in the ref number for the service and would receive infomation as and when.
For the record, NO UK providers support the latter servies, but area info is.

Thats exactly why I suggest they ARE wap push messages!
These do not appear in the messages app but are in the internal web browser.
They list in the same place as bookmarks but opening the browser will display a message saying u have new WAP Push messages

Mik is right, I suggest you go into your default browser to see if the prompt appears.

Yep.....you're right........ WAP push.
Checked my bookmarks and there are 4 new additions;
1 from Sexy Club
and 3 from Free Mobile Club.
Neither were either free or sexy.
They were basically invitations to subscribe to their services.
Not noticed them before...... all unsolicited and VERY expensive.
