from the image shown it appears that the outside of the handset is is unbranded??

I dont think that it is a genuine auction. The seller is only selling to pre approved bidders to start with. All that he has sold in the past is cds and similar stuff. How come he has gone from selling his cd collection to bulk amounts of brand new sim free (which you cant get anywhere else except locked ones) mobile phones?
I would stay well away from him.

i wouldn't ever dream of bidding on such an auction because as you say it does look rather dodgy, but the picture of the phone intrested me

I am guessing when I say that he could have got the image from another forum or ebsite that had the phone to test before it was released and wasnt branded for vodafone.

Looks very suspect, I think this is a genuine Ebayer whose had his account hijacked by scammers who most probably only accept Western Union for payment!
