I quickly flicked through this magazine and the following information was releaved in their magazine:
2004 awards
Best 3G handset: Sony Ericsson V800
Best smartphone: Sony Ericsson P910i
Best network: 3
Looks like Sony Ericsson continues to win most of the awards year in year out

Sony Ericsson have pretty much become one of the trend setters in mobile phone design. For example, many brands use a UI that is similar and incorporate a joystick (or something similar).
I don't SE were the first to use this UI and joystick (I own a fairly old Panasonic that has the same sort of UI and has a joystick) but there's no doubt that it's SE that have popularized it.
I've seen Motorolas, Siemens and even a Nokia using similar UIs to that of SE.

I did wonder about that one myself. Having said that, 3 have expanded at an astounding rate and they have made huge improvements recently, credit where it's due.

could be based on all round network ablity ie service plans ( of which 3 s are very competitive if not the best in the uk) services on offer range of handset as well as network performance

the magazine is available in WH Smith stores in UK. I only quickly flicked through it but I think the reason why 3 was voted best network was mainly because of their outstanding offers and also a dramatic improve in customer services and coverage.
