Is it possible to get a compass on this? Now dont tell me about gps stuff coz my country hasn't even got gps maps for half the cities, and since the speakers do have a magnetic field perhaps its possible! I'd love that on my p9

doesn't sound likely. There would have to be a free moving magnetized part and a sensor for it to be possible. If you really need one I am sure you can get a little key chain compass.

ive got my own compass which I use when travelling, but I just thought it would be nifty to have, especially after seeing nokia 5140 users showing theirs off, perhaps something in the gps frame?

I have a compass application on my 3650. It works by you pointing your mobile towards Sun or Moon at night. Then you have corect pointings on your display. But before using, u have to enter longitude and latitude of your current position.

that sounds far too complicated to be useful. besides, what do you need a compass for if you know your latitude and longitude?

Well, I just said that it is possible without using GPS. I got that lon-lat data from a encyclopedia. I think think this the only solution besides using GPS. And it is not that complicated. :)

My friends e398 has a program. I don't know if the e398 has an inbuilt compass. Basically his asks you to point the phone in the direction of the sun, and then asks if it is daylight savings or something like that. Because the p800 has a touchscreen, we wouldn't need a magnet to point towards the sun, because we probably could just use the stylus to click in the direction of where the sun is. I don't really know.

I have looked on my-symbian.com , it is only for series 60. No UIQ version yet. Sun compass by Axel Fischer. I also have that other java compass that the earlier poster mentioned.

these software compasses that get you to point the phones are a good way of doing this and use an old approximation method that is often taught on orienteering courses etc which allow you to use your watch to work out north and south etc. I learned this when I was about 10 or 12.
here is a good site explaining how to do it with your watch
