I was on a flight from Cape Town SA to the UK [12 hours] and switched my 910 OFF [not flight mode] When I switched it on again the phone had almost 'factory reset'. My contact list was empty, all my ring tones had defaulted back to factory settings. My calender [Handy Day] was intact but I had to access it through applications, it didn't appear as my start as normal. All the photos I had used as wallpapers had gone [not from storage luckily].
Having read through a lot of posts on this subject it seems my problem is not the worst but I would like to know if anyone else has experienced this and how to avoid it happening again, hopefully.
Many thanks,
Amanda

Happened to me on my p800, a couple of times. Now I always back up contact list on sim (and on good old fashioned paper since sim is full!), even tho i havnt experienced problems on my p900 so far (touch wood). I think this may be a problem with the pxxx series tho. Try not to fill the phones memory up too much if its now happening on the p910. Whatever u store on the memory stick should be fine tho.

SE sort this problem out nowwwwwww!

this heppens on your phones when the inner memory is filled up, because the p-series phones use a part of the inner memory for ram, so: more free inner memory and more RAM;)

Did not happen to me, but I always keep 6-8mb of memory available to ensure reliability.

To back up all of my contacts, I send them via bluetooth to my ancient and crusty t68. If anything vanishes, they are there for me to replace...

Just a tip on backing up contacts... syncing with Outlook doesn't preserve the photos or folders... back-up takes too long and is useless if you're trying to do a "reformat" of your phone since back-up/restore restores junk files as well.

Best way is to beam (IR or BT) each folder (not the whole phonebook, unless you don't have folders) to your PC. Under Contacts, select your folder, then Send Folder As... then send it to your PC. Just keep the files as is. These preserve the folder sorting and photos of your contact list.

On my P910i, I keep 18MB of RAM free, and 40MB Internal memory free. I store everything I can on the Pro Duo. (It's easier to back-up the Pro Duo as well using a card reader)

Back up your contacts to your Memory Stick using Smart Vcard (http://www.symbianware.com/index.php?pl=se_p910) so that even if you don't have your computer nearby to restore your contacts, you could still restore them with Smart Vcard.

Thanks to all people kind enough to reply. I hadn't relised anyone had replied as I requested email notification of any replies and didn't get any emails!
I did have full back up on my computer so all was not lost but it was a painful experience and I don't always travel with my laptop.
The internal memory on my phone was at 16% and the ram was running at 42% and as I have a large capacity mem stick and use that for all potos etc. I learnt the hard way about keeping the phone memory clear with my P800.
So still however no cause for the event. A friend suggested condensation on sim card and in the phone from the altitude. Any thoughts anyone??? SE are you addressing this?
Thanks,
Amanda

Can't really help on why that happened, but a really good solution for Contacts is QuickContact by Vitotechnology. As well as being really good for managing/using your contacts, there is an option which makes a backup of your contacts file (all categories, ringtones, photos etc are preserved).

It'll make a backup on C or D, and call the file contactsbackup.cdb (the problem with the vcard is that you'll lose all complementary data like category)
