I decided since my contract with Vodafone is up soon that I would upgrade from the P900 to the P910i, I am a heavy user (About £100 a month) and am on the Anytime 1000 package, so I know that I have a bit of clout when it comes to negotiating.
I first spoke to the usual upgrade people (who are only there to fob off the people who aren't willing to try and wangle a bargain) and got the usual "we can do the upgrade for £100". I then pointed out that I could get the phone cheaper from Orange, at which point they put me through to the 'Lifecycles team', the 'account manager' I spoke to offered me the phone for £150, but with half price line rental for the duration of the contract (a £37.50 saving every month). I told him that I wouldn't be able to do this, as I don't have £150 to spare right now, and said I'd go away and think about it. He then gave it the "oh I can only do this deal for you today... blah... blah", I just said I wouldn't do it without giving it some thought and ended the conversation. I rang back the next day and spoke to another 'account manager' and told him that I'd rung the previous day and was made an offer which I couldn't afford, would there be anything else that they could do (making a big point of my heavy use and that I'd been with vodafone for years), he said he'd go away and speak to his manager about it and see if he could sweeten the deal at all. They delayed getting back to me and stalled for about a week, I asked one of the people I spoke to and he said that each account manager has a target to hit each month, so if you try to upgrade at the end of the month you'll have less luck than if you do it at the beginning (Handy to know!!). Anyway, yesterday the chaps manager got back to me and offered me the phone for free plus half price tariff, although I'd have to have an 18 month contract, I agreed happily and he said he'd put the deal through the following day (1st of feb, so it looks like the upgrade at the beginning of the month advice holds water). I should receive my P910i tomorrow if all goes well and I can look forward to 1000 free xnetwork minutes anytime for the princely sum of £37.50 a month for 18 months. Not a bad bit of work!!

Moral of the story: Upgrade at the beginning of the month, make sure you get put through to the lifecycles team, then try to haggle a little bit further!!

I did a similar thing last year when I upgraded to a P900, so it's not a one off!
I hope this advice helps someone out there.

Matt.

I tried to upgrade from a p900 to a p910 but it was so expensive (I spend £70 a month), so I got a new contract with Vodafone and got my p910 for free with half price line rental and £50 cashback. For me, keeping my phone number is not worth the price of an upgrade.

For me it was get the handset as cheap as you can (unlocked) and then put old sim back in new phone / old number.
