Can anybody tell me if this is a mistake or something I can change with a button or something?

On occasions, when I go into the contacts list in flip closed mode I will press the number three button to select contacts beginning with "e". However sometimes when I press the button it brings up a number "3" instead. The only way I can get it to return to letters is by switching the phone off then on again.

This has happened on both my P910 and P900 (not often though).

Hope this makes sense.

I have not worked it out (as i previously put), the star only changes input mode when the phone is in a normal state, this problem happened yesterday and i pressed the star and i got a "*" appear on the screen.

I have written the full details further down in this topic.

@ Masseur
What you say is true, but that is when you are at the main screen in flip closed mode. This problem happens when you are already in the contacts list.

the way I have always worked it is if I press the digit quickly it goes into numeric entry mode but if I press and hold a digit then it goes to the point in the phonebook that starts with the first letter represented by the digit I pressed

so its a matter of how long you press the first button, isn't it?

no, masseur, it doesn't have anything to do with how long you keep the key pressed. it's a bug - it happened once on my p910 as well. i just couldn't type letters anymote, just digits. restarting the phone solved it. didn't happen again though. sigh!

fair enough. I've never seen that problem and doing what I described always gives me the result I require

i know, i use that feature a lot. it's quite handy to go directly to a certain letter in the phonebook. the funny thing about this bug is that it didn't allow me to switch between input types either - it just got stuck on numerical. didn't happen again after reformatting the internal disk.

I've seen it too, but it was solved after restarting the phone, a bit annoying though...

If you want a good solution try: QuickContact v4.
When you choose the QuickContact when on flip closed mode, and you want to reach the contact Babis (example) you press the numbers 2-2-2-4-7 (you don't have to enter all the digits of course). All the contacts, whose characters correspond to the digits you pressed will be highlighted. That means that double press digit 2, will highlight all the names starting or including: ba,ab, bb, aa.
Or maybe if you have sort the list of contacts by last name and then first name, and you remember only the first name of a contact (or even only his company's name) you can dial the first corresponding digits of the contacts' first name (or company). Believe if you want a fast application to open/find your contacts, with full use in flip closed mode, nothing matches QuickContact
