Possible issues and solutions: 1. avoid fat16 file system. Use fat32. You may had changed the file system. For slow computers, ntfs is not suggested. 2. Check the drivers for mainboard, ide controller etc, 3. Use dma instead of pio mode. 4. Check the bios. Did u make recent changes? Internal and external caches must be enabled. Load the defaults. Right click on your C: and left on properties will confirm filesystem type
Did you have the machine to bits? ie still the same Ram reported?

Did u quik format or low format, low format is time cosumble but it is best also tell the whole cofiguration of ur notebok ie procesr, ram, hddand other add on cards also did u format only one drive and after all try using window 98 or milenium rather than bulky XP as it is mainly for networking or use XP home edition if u r xp savvy: also use default bios setings as they r best cofigured another factor may be driver conflict This message was posted from a T230

I AGREE will all the people who said check the bios fw and also go msconfig and the go to start the untick the unessary or just untick non microsoft published applications
to got to msconfig just got to run and trpe in msconfig in lower case.
also just to check go to command prompt and type in netstat -n and check to see if other computers are connected to you . If you do have computers connected to you you will most likly have spyware running . Make sure you not using a p2p app Im service or downloading Because you may be confused with a FRIENDS IP

It's possible also that your HDD has already developed bad sectors. How old is it? maybe it's about time you bought a new one.
