Ok guys, i really can't get this wifi network to work at all, I'll explain my setup,
I have connected my router to my modem via ethernet (no main pc) and the modem and the router display all the lights that there supposed to.
So i switched my vaio on and it shows that theres a network and i click the icon in the task bar and try to connect to the network, but i can't get any websites to show up at all, i just get blank pages,
I'm really starting to wonder if i'll ever get this to work!

Do you have the vaio set up to obtain an ip address automatically? Does your wifi router need the login info for your adsl connection?

you get white pages? not even an error message? I've not heard of that before. I'd start in the command box by trying to ping a few things and make sure you are getting dns resolution.
try:
ping
http://www.demon.net
ping
http://www.esato.com
also do an
ipconfig
and check that you have an ip address assigned
let us know how you go
edit: @Grimslade, its not ADSL its cable as we find out a couple of weeks ago

@super - Also try your lappy with a patch lead direct into your router/modem to take wireless out of the equation. (make sure your Network Interface Card (NIC) is also set to server assigned IP)
What IP address is the
i) router/modem
ii) Wireless access point (WAP)
and the out put from ipconfig (as above)
*sniff* *sniff* - it that too many cooks?

Well, you could start cooking different dishes. One WiFi a la Nickorooster please?
I have a NETGEAR WiFi Base Station, with a D-Link 504 DSL router connected via an RJ45 (ethernet) cable. Now, On my other 2 PCs (ME with supplied drivers and XP with integrated Drivers) this setup works fine.
However, on MY PC (the only one that matters) the WiFi is extremely unstable. There are no notable interference devices around. I know its not really my PC's set-up (or I hope its not) because it seems to work 60% of the time. However, I seem to be "repairing" the connection a lot. It just disconnects randomly. Sometimes more than others. I was thinking of making a Can-tenna and directing it at the access point, but that seems too much effort for somthing that SHOULD work.
When it IS connected, it says, "Connected at 11mbps Strength = Excellent". I was under the impression that if it was likely to cut out it would have a lower signal strength and a lower connection speed... So it must me spontaneous bursts of diconnectivity...
Does anyone have the same problem? Fixed it?
Nick

If you don't receive an IP then it's the first problem, remove any manualy entered IP and try again. If you have an IP then try to connect to the routeur as see if there isn't some kind of security, usually it's 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1

@nickofoghornleghorn I say, I say, boy do you have any neighbours with WAPs?
I had similair problem with my wireless laptop trying to connect me to a weaker signal (wtf!) but I upgraded my firmware in my Draytek WAP/router, installed some XP updates (not SP2) and moved house and it's been fine since (3rd option was expensive)
