So...
I've posted before about the slightly strange 'crackle' I get when I'm calling someone on my V800 - a crackle that sounds when their phone is ringing and disappears the moment they answer. I've now realised that the crackle only sounds when I'm calling a mobile, not a landline, which is even stranger! A friend who works for Ericsson thinks it might be the network (I'm on UK Voda) and as it's not consistent it's probably not the phone. Any views here? I like the phone a lot, but this is pretty annoying (and not a little strange!)
Also, when I view my calendar on the outside screen (imported from Outlook) there are always two white boxes visable. Any ideas on that?

That crackle seems to be due to some problem with your network. Don't worry! :-D

You think it's a network problem? I've had it when calling from London as well, which should mean that lots of people are experiencing the same thing, right?

There is no reason why you hear the crackling voice only while calling to mobiles and not landlines. If the problem was with your phone, it should make that sound irrespective of whom you call.

yep thats a network problem no doubt about it.... its because u r going from mast to landline to mast again so there is gonna be some interference....
Specially if its only happenin until its answered.... some networks will decrease the quality of a call until it is answered as this can save space on the networks bands.... if its not answered theres no loss.... if its answered it is then switched to a full line which is good quality calls.

Apart from what voda_jon mentioned, heres a small possibility to your problem.
Each person is given a "time slot" in the network to conduct their call. Sometimes these time slots are noisy (crackly) due to the signal processing part being aged.
What i mean by this is that, as the parts get older, the quality of the signal degrades due to heat and constant useage etc.
The signal processing part in the network, known as the transceiver needs to go back to Ericsson or whomever the network equipment vendor is for a service and recallibration.
Its much like a car in many ways - requiring services at regular intervals.

Just to add to voda_jon's post:
He is referring to what is called call quality, broken into the following:
HR = Half rate = Medium Quality
FR = Full Rate = High Quality
EFR = Enhanced Full Rate = Superior Quality
When you make a call in a very busy network that supports these 3 modes of speech quality coding: @ first the network will try to connect the call @ EFR, if it fails it then attempts FR and finally if that fails HR.
With HR, one timeslot is split into two and the speech coding quality is reduced to accomodate more calls to avoid engaged signals.

But what about the white boxes on the status screen? It seems these boxes would indicate AM or PM but they just show up as little boxes? Is this normal?
