I think only 1 phone has symbiam 8 but already Symbian 9 is out. When do u think will see phones with 9 version?. What I dont understand why they so many different versions of Symbians like one with Series 60, 80, UIQ etc, why they dont have one version like microsoft, microsoft do have different versions like pocket, smartphone etc but all software will work on both versions, soon they will have just one version. I think Symbian need to make OS where everyone nokia and others will use same version so more software will come out otherwise they might loss out with microsoft.

For those: Linux is available on a Motorola Smart Phone..I'm not sure which one..Google it...

Symbian 7, 8 and 9 are versions of same OS like Win 98, Win ME, WIn XP etc. Newer version offer bug fixes and improved functionality. But are usually backward compatible with older versions.
As someone mentioned Symbian is a joint venture between several mobile phone manufacurers.

With other words, all manufacturers running Symbian uses same OS.
Series 60, UIQ etc. are not part of Symbian OS. They are GUIs running on top of Symbian and are developed by separate companies.
Each mobile maker wants to distinguish him self from others and hence uses different GUIs. That's what competition is about. Without it, phones would probably have been more expencive than they are now (compare MS on the desktop market). Beside that, we all have different taste. Some like MS, others UIQ or Series 60.
Nothing wrong with variety (to some limits).

well....Symbian is owned in majority by Nokia...! I dont; think Nokia is allowing its usage into other phones apart from the crap they build..!
