Thanks to keen-eyed forum user RexONE, we know that the XDA III - AKA the CDMA based China Unicom CU928 Pocket PC Phone and the GSM based MDA III (not to mention the rumoured CDMA based i-mate Pocket PC Phone that is supposedly being released to Australia in August / September) - has appeared on the MyXDA.COM site, the regional support and registration site for O2 device owners in the Asia-Pacific region (including Australia).
The device does not appear with the designation XDA III, but rather with the codename "Blue Angel", a designation given to the device by its manufacturer, HTC. It can be found on the Registration page in the "Device (required)" dropdown listbox.
This is pretty strong confirmation that O2 intend to release this device, although they have not as yet announced any intention to do so. Users of the current XDA II model are still awaiting confirmation of whether O2 intend to update their device to Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition, something which the XDA III will reportedly come with.
As time draws on, the likelihood of this update being released will decrease; if previous experience is anything to go by, O2 may well withhold the OS upgrade to attempt to force users to upgrade to the new model - this exact scenario occurred with the original XDA in the leadup to the XDA II release.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again - that's not a business model that inspires much confidence, and I truly hope O2 do the right thing and release the OS update. Because frankly, the XDA III (in my opinion) won't be worth the upgrade, unless perhaps they at least have the decency to call it the XDA 2.5 ...
The XDA III would come with a marginally higher capacity battery, integrated Wi-Fi, and a slide-out keyboard. That's the main difference, other than the update to Second Edition. Now, I'm sorry, but I have the Thumb Keyboard, Backpack, and Wi-Fi with my XDA II. Believe me when I say I have no requirement for a new device which delivers nothing new at all.
Now, if this were coming out as a CDMA device, the story would be very different indeed. It would be the first CDMA Pocket PC Phone in Australia, and the fact that it delivered Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and a keyboard in addition to all that the GSM-based XDA II offers, that would indeed make it reasonable to call it a new device.
However, there's a plus side to this. With a bit of luck, the new device will drive old XDA II stock down in price ...
We'll keep you updated as new information comes to hand.
