SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The highly anticipated microchip that will power the Sony PlayStation 3 video game system will be described in detail for the first time by its developers, IBM, Sony and Toshiba.
Dubbed a "supercomputer on a chip," the Cell microprocessor has until now been long on ambition but short on specifics. At a technical conference here, the three electronics giants say they plan to disclose the inner workings of the chip, which is designed to run portable electronics, home entertainment devices and powerful computers.

It's not the speed thats important, its the architecture of the chip. Its massively parallel from the ground up, and has huge bandwidth. This makes chewing thru "multimedia" a task that it will excell at.

i think if anyone want to actually use 'cell' , they will have to pay a lot to rambus alone for the xdr

, and further its almost an year away from any cell products .

actually it's kinda disappointing given all the marketing hype it has recieved:
• Cell can process 256 billion calculations per second (256 gigaflops), falling a wee bit short of marketing hyperbole calling it a "supercomputer on a chip." The slowest machine on the current list of the Top 500 supercomputers can do 851 gigaflops.
