Aquick question, remember before cd headunits were about, people would connect a personal cd player to their unit by using a lead which went from the line out of the cd player to the tape slot of the head unit. could this lead be used to connect the p900 to a tape headunit. hope this makes sense. yes, as long as youve got a 3.5mm to 2.5mm adaptor.

I recall a couple of posts where memebers have done that but a much nicer solution (which I use) is to get one of those devices that plugs into the phone headset socket and then transmits on the FM band so that you can tune it on your car radio. belkin do one for example and they are around 20 pounds.

you could also then use that at home or other locations too

What kind of range do those radio transmitters have?
Also is there any loss in quality?

the most I have used it is across my living room and it sounds very clear, no distortion except when the batteries get low. The one I have is no brand (TX-701 I think its called) and it takes 2 AA batteries and gives 3 different frequency choices around 88mhz (from memory) so you can pick the one with least (or no) interference

I use one for my iPod in the car, I would say they are "Ok" not brilliant but they do. I get a fair amount of hiss which on quieter songs is a bit annoying. Dunno... jurys still out.

Whats the battery life like?

The iTrip is a better (official) one for the iPod & that does seem to work very well. Also uses the iPod battery I think rather than its own

I read that they were illegal to use since you need a broadcasting licence to transmit on FM frequencies (and indeed many other freuqnecies)

Here is the ofcom page regarding this and the specific paragraph for this case

FM Modulators (also known as car baby devices) - the use of the FM broadcast band to transmit a radio signal from a device used in a vehicle to the car radio is illegal. These devices also include CD players and attachments for mobile telephones. Such use - despite the relative short range involved - is subject to licensing under Section 1 of the Wireless Telegraphy Act 1949. As the FM broadcast band is allocated for the exclusive use of licensed broadcasters no other systems are permitted to operate within the band. Use of these systems therefore constitutes an offence.
