Ok, soon to be getting a P800, and also what I had on the menu was a laptop. But then it hit me, maybe I could do without spending an extra £500 on a second hand laptop and actually just get a Palm Wireless Keyboard instead. I know it sounds a little crazy but what do you think, does the P800 do pretty much the same as a laptop anyway?

My main reason for such a device is to browse the internet mobile and also to maybe do a little bit of word processing. I know laptops are cool and all, but it seems so much cheaper and almost as good to use the P800.

What do you think? Is there anything the P800 can't do that a laptop can, and will I actually need to use it? (Actually I imagine only I can answer that last part, but still...)

No ideas then guys? I was thinking that maybe it wouldn't actually be able to do some stuff I'd use a laptop for, like web design, and it wouldn't be able to handle graphics apps either. Other than that it seems a decent replacement.

ummm, i dont know. I have p800, and i think the wireless keyboard would be a big improvement, but also, the p800 is a slow machine, so its ok for browsing mobile with opera (not more than 2 or 3 sites at the same time).
I dont know how it would work with QuickOffice for big documents, in theory its a good solution, but who knows?
umm, this is probably the most useless reply you've ever got, but seriously im full of doubts about the use you can give to your phone. like, ok: i do a lot of things with my p800, i do some heavy web surfing everyday, and i use quickword sometimes to read/write documents (i dont have a bt keyboard though), but it feels like you can do only really light tasks with the p800, you know what i mean? for the rest of the tasks i usually need the PC.
Like.. i dont know, i feel like if i start writing some document with Quickword, at some point im gonna realize i cant insert pictures (i dont think thats the case), or i cant do some other thing, so im gonna have to use my PC.

i dont think u could swap a p800 for a laptop, some web sites are large images and would take for ever and a day to get them all, word processing would be a tad hardcore on a p800, u can get a new laptop for £500 these days so if ur looking for a second hand one u cld get a half decent one for £200 providing u aint after much power

If there isn't much difference in the prices, I'll always prefer a laptop. But then, you can't keep the laptop in your pocket! This message was posted from a T230

Thanks for the replies guys. I think that it just might depend on who's using it and what for. If it's purely for the purpose of staying connected with others through the net then the P800 seems to be the tools, but a laptop offers much more functionality. I'm not yet sure what I'd need. There was a good article about this kinda thing over at 3lib: http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/onlycomputer.htm

Well, it is certain that there are things you cannot do on a P800 (at least not conveniently), but here are some things I do regularly on mine:

- Browse the web, make online purchases and payments, administrate web hosting accounts
- manage my mail accounts
- upload/publish web pages/files

Maybe with a keyboard, typing simple Word documents would be a breeze, but anything complicated and that 156mhz processor will groan at you

I am currently looking for something with a more powerful processor (say 400mhz) and a good keyboard to replace my P800 with. Pity the 9500 has a 150mhz processor. Shame! What were they thinking at Nok?

Its difficult to be cash strapped with all these oh-so desireable gadgets nowadays, huh(!) Most of us here may know that feeling but always keep in mind that generally, no one gadget is as effectively flexible as to replace another gadget.

AYA made a very valid point in saying "Maybe with a keyboard, typing simple Word documents would be a breeze, but anything complicated and that 156mhz processor will groan at you". This is an example of the many possibilities and capabilities one multi-featured gadget may have but always remember that you may soon realize its shortness of convenience (and/or practicality) in the long run.

Maybe as to make suggestion, why not go for just the P800 first as you buy time saving for a laptop instead of investing on a keyboard and then eventually ending up with buying that coveted laptop, as human nature may quite well push you to do.

Getting a 2nd hand laptop due to budget constraints (as you did with the P800) is not at all a bad idea as long as careful choice (and patience against tempting eagerness) is made.

With all these suggestions and concern by this and the previous posters, I hope you're able to make a sound decision and may you enjoy the results of your decision.
