Recently, I've been having hard time receiving gprs signal (inverted blue triangle) from smart in the some metro manila areas. I've tried it in the province and it's ok.

I have tested it in two SE phones (t610 and t630) each with a smart sim.

I've also talked with an engineer from smart and he said that they migrating to "push" technology with the use of gprs.

It means that in the very near future, subscribers will only have a signal only when:

1. browsing through wap
2. sending mms
3. receiving mms
4. sending pop3 e-mail (I've yet to confirm this...)
5. receiving pop3 e-mail (...this too)

Smart also said that if you don't access your gprs (by doing any of the the above items) within a month. Your activation will expire. Which means you have to text OTA settings which cost P3.50 or so to reactivate your gprs.

Sucks, doesn't it... I'm now thinking of moving to globe or sun...

never had a problem with smart's gprs. if triangle disappears, it's normally for a few seconds or so then reappears.

i use gprs constantly throughout the day so i imagine i would probably not be affected to much by the new policies. almost 70% of my monthly bill is in gprs charges!

i do know that on my prepaid line, i got a msg that the service would be deactivated since i never used it, which i think is fair enough.

i'm just guessing here, but could having to maintain a lot of inactive connections by the network affect throughput speed or service reliability? i notice that at certain times of the day, connection speed is 'normal', i.e. equal to very good speed on globe, while at other times it is amazingly fast, almost instantaneous. if so, then i'm all for the new policies.

i think bottom line is that if there is no delay in connecting to the network when you need to, then it's not an issue. only SE users will notice the absence of the triangle when not connected anyway. the majority, which are bokia users, won't even know the difference.

For the past month, I tried using Agile Messenger on my Smart Postpaid using a Nokia 3660. I tried to be on 24 hours a day, 7 times a week and there was never a day where I won't be cut. This usually happens after midnight.

Note: I did this on an experimental basis on the reliability of Smart gprs signals... 100% of my bill was on gprs usage. For the period covering December 2004 to January 2005, using Agile Messenger trying to be 24/7, Smart charged me Php 1,678.00 while I spent only Php 200.00 with a Sun prepaid which had more connection time and more data upload (sending of pictures and voice message over yahoo) over Agile.

Sun however has problems with their prepaid loading with reports of loads just disappearing (like in my wife's case... she uses Agile 24/7 too) but the risk is worth taking.

i had this problem i thought dahi sa dual sim holder ko pero when i turn my unit off and on again, nagkakaroon na ng signal. this happens both with my wife's postpaid addict/t1610 and my gold/t230.

i never had access with esato/yahoo messenger with any sonyericsson phone from the start.

smart still blocks esato from their network. for what reason, i have no idea...

@crowing, when the blue triangle disappears, try launching the browser. in my case, once i launch the browser (or use an app that requires GPRS) the triangle appears almost immediately and i am able to go online.

this worked with my P800/910 and T630/Z600. for my T68, i sometimes had to switch off and on again.

Thanks guys for posting your experiences.

Although your suggestions are correct regarding turning off/on and browsing the internet to get the gprs signal back, it still contradicts the meaning of the word.

GPRS is an "always on connection". Technically if you have no blue inverted triangle in your phone, you have no signal.

It's just like paying money to breath air.

I hope somebody from SMART, GLOBE, and SUN can read this to avoid making the same mistake just to earn a few bucks (well actually big money)... Keep on posting!!!
