I received a mini ipod as a gift just under a year ago, and i have had a few problems with it, the main on being that the battery charge does not hold for more than 2 hours! I have sent it back to apple and they have said that this is within spec and they cannot do anything about it. Has anyone else had this problem? and if so, how was it solved.. or could someone please give me some advice about how i can try and make the batery last as long as possible! Otherwise its far too much hassle and im going to bin it!

I don't think 2 hours is within spec especially in a year!! Apple say that "A properly maintained iPod battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity after 400 full charge and discharge cycles". I doubt if you've charged it 400 times in a year, so it should still give you 80% capacity at least.
Is it still under warranty? If so, get back on to Apple and quote their specs at them!
Some people have found that completey resetting the iPod back to factory defaults helps rejuvenate a bad battery...
First of all, make sure you've got a backup of all your tunes on your computer. Then go to
http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/ and download the iPod Updater.
Run it and choose the "Restore" option. Then, start again with syncing your tunes.
Finally, read through this:
http://www.apple.com/batteries/ipods.html for tips on extending the battery life.
Hope that helps...

Ive tried all of those things!
I went into the apple store and they said they would replace it when they had some in stock, but they would have to send it away etc etc because mine is engraved. and then i sent it away and they sent it back saying no major problem was found and it was within spec. i accepted this, as you do, whacked it on charge, put all my songs back on and it lasted about 2 hours at the most.. i dont know where to go from here, apart from get bck onto apple because it is still under warranty

Yes, maybe. If you are seriously considering binning it, I'm sure someone (like me) would love it, even with a battery life of less than 2 hours!!

Yeah, definately get back onto Apple. Start stamping your feet! Take a print-out of the Apple web-page where it says about the 80% charge after 400 charge cycles... Wave it under their noses until they give you a new one!!! They must be able to accept that its impossible to have done 400 charges in less than a year.
And 80% capacity is 6.4 hrs not 2 hrs...
