Hi
I contacted O2 today regarding updating my firmware as I have the original version and it's getting on my nerves now! After about 5 emails later telling them that I didn't want to upgrade my actual phone only the firmware they said to contact an O2 shop showing my proof of purchase. I would like to know if anybody has gone down this route for updating. i dont have a sync station or cable so an online update is not an option. Will they do the update at the shop there and then or will they send the phone off? I've tried ringing the shop but there is no answer.
I'd appreciate any comments or experiences you've had.
Cheers

I had the same trouble as you. The numerous people I spoke to on the phone at O2 couldn't understand that I wanted to update the software in the phone, not the phone itself. They are thick!
I had the same trouble at my local O2 store. They seem to know nothing! I wouldn't trust them to to do anything with my phone, let alone update the firmware.
In the end I bought a cable and did it myself with one of the third party firmware upgrading programs available. I also got it de-branded from O2 too...
The official SonyEricsson Update Service does not work with O2 branded phones anyway, so even if you did purchase a sync station (as I did) you can't use it.
For some unknown reason O2 don't allow you to update the firmware via SE.

Thanks! I think I'll try and visit the O2 in my dinner and see what they say! I was going to change my phone but I like the K700i and I think it will be heaps better with some decent firmware in it. Is the latest version still R2AE033? I've heard that with this version you lose the ability to add those little animations in text messages, is this true?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

cheers for the info.
How much did it cost for the upgrade in fw? I'm on contract with O2 so do I need to take it to the O2 shop or will CFW do it anyway? As it's still within it's first 12months of contract does that mean it's still under warranty and I can get it done for free??
thanks!

It will be free as it under 12 months old.
I actually had mine done in a O2 shop but in Central London.
Takes up to a day depending on how busy they are.
Good luck Beeb!
edit: you shouldn't need anything but the phone (not even the battery and SIM).

Hi beeb
If you can't find an O2 shop or Carphone Warehouse to do it, you can always take it to an

service centre. Call or email

and they'll tell you where your nearest one is. This will be free of charge as it is under warranty, and is definitely your best bet.
R2AE is still the latest.

Take a look at my
K700 / K500 Firmware overview thread for information about what has changed between your older firmware and the latest R2AE.
Personally I used DaVinci to update my O2 R2A phone to R2AE. The results are quite pleasing. The only real differences you will notice is an improved battery life and the quicksearch function in the contacts. However, the improved battery life alone is worth the £7 or so to perform the update. Of course, you will need a cable to do it, but these can be purchased off EBay or borrowed (like I did) off a friend with a P800/900.

I had a good experience in the O2 store - southampton
phone went away for a few days and came back updated with latest firmware,
initially I was told that I could swap my 6 month old K700 for a brand new Nokia 6230 courtesy of O2 as there had been so many probs with the SE K700, I told them I wanted my k700 back and have been pleased with the update phone...
