I have DVDx and Smartmovie and I've been trying for ages to convert DVDs into decent movie files.

I thought it was just my P910's limitations but having downloaded a converted movie from that JC website linked from this board I realise it is just my conversion technique. The movie d/l'd was in Xvid format.

What I've been doing is to rip the dvd using DVD Decrypter. The convert from the vobs to MPEG using the standard settings for an SVCD or 2 pass AVI - screen sizes and bitrates just set to work on a normal DVD player/tv.

Then I feed em into Smartmovie and use the Xvid codec at 128 bit setting, reduced frames, forced mono, lowish (c.30) rate for sound.

The results either look sharp and jerky or blocky/artifacty and jerky. Nothing like as smooth as is clearly possible.

At what point am I doing something wrong?

sounds like alot of hassle all those steps so just a thought, have you looked at DVD-to-P900 in two clicks.

I have tested the iPAQ version of this and it works great!

In my experience, encoding your avi/mpg file in SmartMovie, using a DivX 5.1 codec with following settings, gives a good and smooth result with a relatively small file:
Landscape mode, encoding bitrate of 140, untick "reduce frames" and select 44.100 / 40kbps for sound. Try that.
