ok I have been staring at lots of .sis files in both c:\install and d:\install and I was wondering if I can remove them? do they serve some purpose, or do they just take up space?

If you remove them, you cannot uninstall the applications and need to remove them manually. These files dont take much space and I would keep them!

They are not the installers, they are part of the INSTALLED app so don't delete them!
Also u should notice most of them are 1kb in size or less, and a few kb at most
