Im uploading JPEG's to my phone, and my problem is that some just dont work on the phone. Once loaded, their preview picture is a red "X".They are also JPEGS, around the same dimensions as other that work, same type of picture, but they dont work, unless I use image editor to edit them slightly, then save them.
I though primarily, that it was because they were too big. Howevver I have got larger* pictures on the phone, and they were just slightly squished.
*Larger as in dimension, not physical file size.

I got these errors on my phone when they were low on memory. Might be that. You need atleast around 300 - 450 kb free for proper functioning. (That is if you are using wap mainly)
