hi i was thinking of gettin a v800 very soon and i was wondering whether you could take pictures without opening the phone using the external screen? Also can someone help me decide on whether i should get a moto a1000 or a se v800 please

You can use the external screen for pictures but not video. You can also change the brightness and turn on the flash w/ teh phone closed.

Unfortunately the external screen doesn't show the picture phonebook though, only caller ID. The pic is only displayed on the internal screen

Yes you can use the external screen as viewfinder but it is my impression that it is not as accurate as the internal screen. At least I can't seen to aim it as well.
