hi,im about to move home and wont have internet,i know you can use phones as modems and was wonderin how id go about it.
do you get full internet acces or is it just wap? what are the speeds? and how much does it cost?

you will need a cable or bluetooth to connect phone to pc. Very easy to set it up with BT, not sure about cable as i havn't tried. Speeds are very poor i thought, GPRS didn't seem much quicker than 56k, even though it connected at something like 115kb/s.
Wouldn't want to use wap, have done that on PDA and it is extremly slow.
Cost will vary depending on your provider and the service you are on anywhere from £1.50 to £15 a mb i guess. Be cheaper to just not use the internet for a couple of weeks while you wait for broadband to be installed

yup... im using my k700i as a modem to access the web through BT. Full net access & im more than happy with the speed on Orange in Mumbai.
But it costs a bomb, so im switching over to Airtel soon.

Setting up dial up is a doddle - just register for a pay as you go service, set up a new connection in your PC and tell it to use your phone's modem to connect.

Dial up is 9.6k on most uk networks and GPRS is up to 56k

Ok, but having used both, I didn't notice that much difference just loading web pages, checking email, and so on. Certainly not enough difference to jsutify the extra cost for GPRS.

When you talk about modem speeds, make sure you understand the units so you won't get confused. Mostly modem speed is measured in Kbits/second meaning the number of bits that is handled every second, not the same as Kbytes/second. 1 Byte = 8 bits and 1Kbit = 1024 bits.
Therefore 56 Kbps (Kilobits per second) = 7 KBps (kilobytes per second)
