Im not sure if this has been answered before but i was wondering is it possible to upgrade the firmware on P900 to a newer one via the sony ericsson update service?
in other words, does it mean you dont need to take the phone to a service centre to upgrade the firmware to a newer one?

That is correct all u need is your DSS-20 or DSS-25 desktop cradle and to meet the requirements of the update service. Obvioulsy you will need a stable connection to the internet.

ok. sorry to sound silly but how will the data/information travel from the sony server to my p900?

No u will not need bluetooth.
There is software that you will have to download & install from
website first, then it will instruct you on how to proceed with the update.
The software u download and install on your pc talks to the
firware servers via the internet and in turn it talks to the software in your pc...the software then sends commands to the P900 via the cradle that you have plugged into the usb port of your pc.
Do not interrupt the process while it is running and shut down any unecessary applications. Also try not to have other downloads running while attempting to update the P900.

btw: does P910i also have this update service?
(I think all phones should have access to such service and is a great way of updating software and saves us from gonig to SE centres to update firmware)

The following handsets have this service:
* K700i
* S700i
* P900i
* P910i
* V800
And this service is being expanded to the rest of the handset range as well. So yes, no more
service centre visits for firmware upgrades.
Please note: If you have a branded handset, the service may only update the firmware with the respective networks version. It will not remove the branding. In some cases you will not be able to update if it is branded and may have to take it to the relevant network's outlet.

the p900 that i have was an upgrade on vodaphone.
Its a generic unit, and it is standard unlocked however it does have the vodaphone start up screen when switched on.
does that mean mine is branded?

It is possible that icould be a customised Vodafone firmware, best thing is backup your phone and give the update service a try..thats the only way you will know.

I think most phones these days tend to be customised by networks which I dont like. I perfer non branded phones but of course its expensive to buy sim free handsets then by upgrading.
