I have a p900 which was an upgrade from vodaphone.
The phone doesnt has no logo and no voda live cr*p on the software, however it does have the usual start up voda thing on the phone.
Does that mean my phone is unbranded or branded to vodaphone software?

It means you have Voda branded firmware as the startup/shutdowns are part of the f/w.

I had the same thing, after a year of having a P900 on Voda i then realised it was unlocked to any network!!

No. Branding & locking are completely separate.
Locking is SIM lock so the phone accepts only specific SIMs.
Branding is done via the firmware & is there to change, add or remove features according to the Networks requirement.
A phone can have branded f/w & be unlocked e.g. O2 branded K700.
A phone can also be locked but not branded.

so does that mean I cant use the sony ericsson online update service?
to be honest, i think thats silly coz it shouldnt matter if its branded, the online service update should still be able to update the firmware just like sony ericsson service centre do. they too just download from the sony ericsson sites.
