LG the world's fifth-biggest manufacturer of mobile phones, will release a mobile phone equipped with a 5-megapixel digital camera in the second quarter, a company source said Friday.
Development of the phone was announced on Thursday by Ahn Seung-kwon, head of LG's mobile phone research laboratory in Seoul.
"Given the result of network interoperability tests with wireless operators, we are expecting to start selling the 5-megapixel camera-phone in the second quarter," said the source, who asked not to be identified.
Samsung Electronics Co. (KSE:005930), the world's third-biggest mobile phone producer, announced in October the development of the world's first 5-megapixel camera-phone when it combined one of its phones with a camera module supplied by Japan's Asahi Pentax.
In South Korea, where more than three-quarters of the 48 million population have mobile phones, people taking photos with their mobile phone cameras has become a commonplace sight.
