Im wanting a Sony laptop but have heard that they contain all the o/s and software on a seperate partition on the hd. I dont like all the software they put these systems and was wondering if this partition can be removed( when I reformat c:) and my own fresh copy of xp installed ???. Can this be done or would I be stuck with the preinstalled stuff.

Thanks in advance.

Mark

I am on my 5th vaio laptop now and have never seen what you describe.

most laptops have the CAB files on the C drive so that when you do windows updates etc you don't need to keep reaching for the windows discs.

Also vaios come with restore discs which means that a 20 minute process gets your hard drive back to the state it was when you bought it

don't be put off, sony make great pc's! laptops and desktops

Thankyou, just reading that "The disk is divided to three partitions: (1) hidden restore partition (5 GB), (2) disk C:, and (3) disk D.

I need max amount of space hence want to either delete this 5gb partition or install a nice new copy of xp, with no software installed.

Can this be done ?

im not sure if its the same as on a desktop pc, but I Like to format c drive(wipe everything) then install xp from my xp disk

generally the vaios are partitioned into two equal parts and then there is a small amount reserved for writing everything from memory to disc for standby which is a great feature and allows for quick restart and getting back to where you were when you suspended

I've been using that feature since it was available on early laptops as a 3rd party option

not sure if there is a way to disable that using the sony software but if you really want to install XP yourself from a full XP disc then you can do want you want I guess, including how you want it partitioned
