Hello,

I've been meaning to make this post for nearly a year!

My P800 was stolen from the overhead locker on Vietnam Airlines, and well I've been meaning to get all the numbers of my friends that are well overseas!

Using a saved backup file (whole system) how can you extract just the contents. I haven't disected how the backup format is done yet, but i assume it to be an archive of some kind.

What I WOULD LOVE!!!! Is some nice user to contact me on MSN (talllmc@hotmail.com) and take my 8 megabyte backup file and install it to their phone - then extract the phone numbers. Of course they would have to do a full backup of their phone first.

That's the easiest way, the other option is to use the P800 SDK emulator. But I don't know if the emulator can actually emulate restoring a file full system backup file. I don't think it is possible.

If anyone can help with either of these two options please let me know. I'm a seasoned GNU/Linux guru and webmaster (+ Master CNE, MCSE, SCO ACE (eerk), AS/400 etc), so if I can return any geek favours down the track I will.

Cheers,

Luke

i'm sorry il can't do what you ask,but you can use this http://sistoolse.hollosite.com/ and go to c/system/data/contacts.cdb and extract the file and put it manually in the phone using a file manager.

You've just prompted me to play a bit...

I can extract contacts from a backup file and get them up on the UIQ emulator, but I can't see a way of extracting them to some other file (except by manually cutting and pasting each contact into a jotter file or whatever).

Anyone else got any ideas?

Erm - I beg to differ. I just extracted my cdb from a backup, copied it to the emulator and it worked fine. Why won't that work with a real phone? I guess you might have to use a filemanager of some sort because the contacts file will be locked, but there must be a way round that...

Just wondering - if you've managed without for a year, why do you need the extract now?

I haven't done this for a long time, because l use another way now once a month l backup my contacts by sending the folder to my pc with the ''send this folder option'' on my phone the file shows up as a vcf file on my computer and if anything goes wrong in the future l just delete everything on the phone and send the same file back to my phone using ir or bluetooth and the phone just puts everthing back in it's place again. try it....

yeah, that`s the best option, to send the contacts via bluetooth to pc or - the best one -> select send as mms, save as template, browse template with fileman, extract the all.vcf file and put on pc in safe place.

you cant put contacts.cdb on the phone because will say in use. But you can put the phone in backup mode and then browse with epocware fileman to put the cdb file. ONLY that way will work.

...
one of methods of unlocking Contacts.cdb file is... putting the phone into backup mode.

Connect the mobile to PC, use Backup/Restore app, and when phone restarts and goes to 'backup-ready' mode ('Backup in grogress' or sth) just use PC File Manager to copy Contacts.cdb into the mobile.
