> SE Online Update Serivce pointless for most

The whole idea of a online update service is to update your firmware on your phone but given that the large majority of people get a phone either through a new contract or through upgrade, the phone is obviously going to be branded according to your network provider (well, here in the UK anyway).
So, this means I along with most others CAN'T upgrade your firmware using the SE online update service. So, whats the point in introducing such service given that over 90% of people get a phone through upgrade or new contract?
It therefore means that only those you buy a £500 P900 or P910i sim free, unbranded phone have use such service.
I have a P900 on Vodaphone and whilst there is no logo or "voda live" crap on the phone, I do have the usal voda start up thing when I on the phone.
It didnt allow me to update the phone and same for my P910 on T-Mobile.
Pretty pathetic to say the latest and SE might as well not bother.

I said this yesterday. its not fair. we've bought a sony phone but cant use its full features. My o2 k700 can take other sims but wont let me update the firmware. They've sold us a
product so why not let us use it?

I'm sure there's still a high amount of people on unbranded phones though through being able to buy the handset they want by being on PAYG. I work in an electrical shop and sell phones and to keep stock levels down, we've decided to only keep unbranded phone's in stock and SIM card packs to a customer can take away exactly what they want. This has proven good in sales as when we still had a high amount of branded handsets available with unbranded handsets available, the branded sets just wouldn't go and the unbranded sets flew out.

There ae actually plenty of people, including myself, who have been able to update their branded phone to newer, sometimes better, albeit branded, software.
writes these softwares in cooperation with the operators. If the operator chooses to allow online updates and develop new firmware to update older firmware, which most do, there is no real problem is there?

Because it will only work once the network has approved a new firmware and it is uploaded to the server.
I also remember hearing that O2 UK has never allowed for online updates.... but Orange for example has.....

Which one is larger world wide, branded or unbranded SE phones?
If unbranded is larger, then all of the branded phone users should make a petition to your provider not to limit the function of any SE (or other) phones the sold.
