How easy, or difficult is it to send/receive international sms text messages?
I'm on Orange Just Talk, and I sent a couple of sms' to a friend in New York. She never received them.
Should it be just as straightforward as sending an SMS from a UK phone to another UK phone, (but with the international number), or is there something else I need to know or do?

Well, there are two issues here: sending sms to the rest of the world, and sending sms to the USA.
The rest of the world is easy: it's almost all GSM based, so you just send your text to +countrycodephonenumber. So for Belgium, that would be +32phonenumber.
The US, however... most networks here do not use GSM, but all different technologies. They're not compatible with sms (yet). The only full GSM network here (Cingular is converting slowly) is VoiceStream. VoiceStream "does not support international messaging". I notice that I can send and receive messages from VS to just a few networks in Europe (it works to Vodafone UK for me), but that's all.
I hope they'll get their shit together here in the US and interconnect all networks... but until then, no sms to your friend in NY...

Wich service provider is your friend using in NY?

My friend is on a Sprint PCS network.
I have an T86, she is using a Siemens model. (Not that this would make any difference I guess)
She did mention last night that her Boss managed to get International SMS working, but she said that there was paperwork of some sort involved?!?!?!
Then again, her boss might be on a different network again.

Yeah, Sprint PCS in the US does not use GSM, they have CDMA. Up til now, they don't even have text messaging (I was a Sprint customer up til a month ago, and switched over for that reason), except for through WAP or email. So I'm afraid that's not gonna work...

I noticed most of the messages in this category are dated from January this year...
I'd be interested to know, has anybody had any success texting from the UK to the US lately (as of July) ?
I'm on Voicestream in Chicago with a T-68 and can send SMS to my buddy in London (not sure of his carrier) but he can't send them back to me...
