Seems like

drastically limits is market access by not maintaining CDMA versions of its GSM phones. Would it really be that hard to swap out the radios?

We've discussed this topic a few days ago.... I think SE doesn't see much in the future of CDMA.

They did not make any money on CDMA and pulled out. Their main focus now is the WCDMA (UMTS 3G) market.

Wonder why CDMA didn't catch up even though it offers better voice clarity and data transfer? (Compared to GSM )

OK, I can buy the argument that they were bleeding money in the CDMA market and chose to focus on the market where they were stronger. But no future? C'mon. 3G will have multiple flavors just like 2G does, and UMTS will not be the only 3G standard out there. Verizon and Sprint, the U.S. CDMA carriers, will continue to go their own way, as will Korea.

Just take a look where most manufacturers of mobile equipment (e.g. base stations) and phones are located (it ain't USA where CDMA originates to my knowledge). There may also be some patent disputes with Qualcom, which may have prevented any larger deployment.

the original poster's question should be "why is sony ericsson not offering fones for the usa market?"
se has not pulled out of development of cdma fones.
also, as another poster has claimed "patent something something". umm, no. in fact qualcomm owns most of patents that are used in cdma fones. it even says so, as the logo on the back of all of au's fones. "cdma by qualcomm".
here are 4 of the newer fones that se developed for japan:
http://www.sonyericsson.co.jp/product/index.html
so yr question should be: what are the factors that are making it unatractive as a market for carriers and se to work together for se to develop fones for the usa market".

Most people here don't know about the things you told about CDMA.
