The K700i music player is limited by the handsets small memory in terms of mp3 storage. However it is not all doom and gloom
You can reduce the bitrate of mp3 from 128 to 96 if you are prepared to compromise. This gives you about 16 mp3 tracks.
However a much better option is to use the AAC codec. With this codec, (itunes has a free AAC encoder), you can use a 96Kbps for the same quality as MP3 at 128Kbps, and the same 16 tracks.
If you aren't super fussy, it still sounds good at 64Kbps using AAC, which gives you 22 tracks for your 40MB. This is what I'm using for music at the moment (it just better than carrying around another gadget), and it gets me through the day. Forgo Movies but I've still enough room for games and photos, and 20 of my current favourite music tracks. The sound quality is as good (if not better) at 64Kbps as Sony's ATRAC MDLP2 codec, which is very listenable.
Okay so I know it's a unique solution for a small number of situations, however if it'll work for you, here's what you do:
1. Install itunes (or aac encoder of your choice)
2. Convert an MP3 or CD track to AAC (in itunes just right click the track and click convert to aac)
3. The converted file will have an extension of m4a. Rename the extension to 3gp, for example songname.m4a becomes songname.3gp. The K700 will not recognise the file as an audio file if it doesn't have the 3gp extension, and will just copy it into the 'other' folder
4. Send the file to your phone via BT, USB, Serial, Ir or GPRS, those are your only choices

Ah, r2ae letīs you use .m4a files withou changing file extension.
I personaly donīt like itunes aac converter, i prefer dbpoweramp+CLI encoder
Iīve been told the best one is Neroīs

@Arez, thanks for the heads up on encoders, I'd guessed itunes wasn't the greatest choice! If I can get even smaller file sizes (for same quality) I'll be stoked.
r2ae? My K700i doesn't seem to like m4a extensions. If I force it into the sounds folder with that extension it only lets me send it, not play.

I've got The White Stripes' "Elephant" on my phone in .m4a format, 96kbps. Works and sounds great. Good for the gym!
