Nokia exploding again!
It seems it may happen with other phones too, when they are close to high voltage lines.
Here's the article:

Nokia faces Bt1-million exploding phone suit

Published on Mar 14, 2005

A civil lawsuit has been filed against the local office of Finnish mobile-phone maker Nokia, seeking damages of Bt1 million for an accident last year that disabled a phone user.

Public prosecutors filed the suit against Nokia (Thailand) Co Ltd last Friday on the recom-mendation of the Consumer Protection Board (CPB), which acted on behalf of the affect-ed phone user, 50-year-old Prasit Sriseeluang, Office of the Attorney General (OAG) spokesman Sirisak Tiyaphan said yesterday.

In the lawsuit, the prosecution said that on March 12 last year, Prasit, a welder, was working near a high-voltage power pole when his Nokia 3310 mobile phone in his shirt pocket rang.

The phone then exploded, seriously injuring Prasit. He suffered severe burns, his right leg and all five toes of his left foot were amputated, and his right hand was crippled.

The CPB, which concluded that defective parts in the phone caused the incident, referred the case to public prosecutors on February 24, almost a year after the incident, Sirisak said.

The OAG agreed with the CPB’s arguments and decided to bring the case to the Civil Court on Friday, one day before the one-year statute of limitations expired, the spokesman said.

He said that the plaintiff ask-

ed for Bt1 million in damages with an annual interest rate of 7.5 per cent.

CPB secretary-general Rassa-mee Witthaves said yesterday that the agency decided to take the case to court after Nokia (Thailand) denied any responsibility about the incident.

“Nokia insisted it was not their fault because the incident had nothing to do with their phone

system or any defects. And they are positive the incident was not caused by the fact that the phone was used near a high-voltage power pole,” Rassamee said.

She said that after consulting with experts from an educational institution, the CPB was convinced it was “highly likely” that the two factors were correlated.

The CPB chief said the case was the first against a mobile-phone manufacturer.

“The CPB wants to prove that use of a mobile phone near a high-voltage electricity pole increases the possibility of an explosion. If it’s proven to be true, the CPB will require that all mobile-phone makers include a warning in their operation manuals,” she said.

There was no official comment from Nokia (Thailand) yesterday regarding the lawsuit.

I am certain that Nokia will win the case (as in the past), if ever, the BEST compensation is to replace the damaged Nokia 3310, 5 toes etc. with new ones (charger included) . . .
