If I look in c:\system\data using SMAN I can see the contacts.cdb (but obviously not copy it)

If I do a partial backup and cancel I can browse my phone using File Manager but cannot find contacts.cdb in c:\system\data if I do a full backup I cannot find it in any folder using Backup Inspector.

This is driving me nuts as I know the file is there but cannot find it. my contacts are showing in my phone but for some reason I cannot find the file manually.

BTW I have actually backed this up several times before so I am not new to this.

Hi madbob,
i have tried to do this using Tracker, the error message i get states that the contacts cdb is in use, this is immediately after turning the phone on and going straight into tracker and attempting to copy the file as far as the memory stick (D drive).
i can only surmise that the contacts cdb is loaded into memory straight away on startup, and I recall that when you do a backup the phone is switched off for the backup to take place hence the phone is for all intents and purposes dead and nothing is loaded straight to RAM from the phone.

Not much use to you but at least you can stop banging your head against a wall ( unless of course you're trying to hack round it )

No you misunderstand I have used this method to manually back-up / restore the contacts.cdb before with no problems, it is simply that I can not see the contacts in my File Manager on the PC this time and CAN see it on the phone with Sman.

I will have to do a fresh PC OS install and see if this helps otherwise something I have installed on the phone is causing the problem.

I am wondering if it is the free sony frontend that I put on and removed a while ago caused this?

When you are looking from the pc do you have hidden/system files enabled in explorer?
(assuming you are using MS!)

Not using windows explorer and no they are not on MS but on the phones C: drive. I use FileManager 1.0 to browse the phone half way through a backup (which I cancel) I have done a fresh OS installation and this is still a problem.

It has to be something I installed on my phone so I am going to have to unistall everything and test again.

This is a documented bug in the backup process. There is a long thread on my-symbian about this, but there appears to be no unique reason why it happens. Apparently really old versions of PC suite were better, maybe installed apps interfere with the unlocking process of the .cdb file during the backup.

So, the danger is that if you wanted to restore, you would restore an empty contacts file to your phone.

There are several ways round this
1) as you have done, extract the file manually and paste it back using the same method
2) extract all contacts as a .vcf file (you lose all category info etc)
3) use QuickContact, which has a backup and restore option. It replicates the contact.cdb file to either C or D, with all categories, ringtones etc, and there is a one step restore option too. that way you are always carrying a backup of your contacts file with you, and it also figures in the .ecs backup file on your PC

I use QuickContact

Thanks I will look at QC, I could understand a bug stopping it being backed up but not one that won't let you actually SEE the contacts.cdb to backup manually!
