I have had a strange problem with my internet connection since buying a new computer, and my sister has a similar problem on her machine. Both machines are running Windows XP.
Basically, about 2-3 times a day I seem to 'lose' the connection with my router (am on 512k broadband). Other machines in the house, like my mother's and sister's machines are also networked to the router, which has a built in LAN. When I lose this connection though, it doesn't sign me out of msn, and I seem to still be able to surf Esato (although the 'google' ad band on the right hand side starts displaying 'page not displayed'), but not sites like Ebay, and Outlook Express won't send/recieve emails. However, this is quickly and easily fixed by going into the 'network connections' icon in control panel, right-clicking on the connection name, and then clicking on 'repair', which clears various caches, something to do with DNS servers etc., and within seconds I'm back up and running again! It will then run fine for hours, before it starts going funny again. Strangely enough my mum's old PC which is running Windows 95 doesn't do this, and my rather old laptop running Windows 98 SE also works fine without this odd problem. Only seems to be affecting the WinXP machines!
Basically, how do I get rid of this slightly annoying fault, and what's causing it? Is some kind of cache getting full when it shouldn't, a small and obscure setting somewhere's set wrong, or none of the above? Both XP machines are up to date on Windows updates, and virus scanners, firewalls, and anti-spyware is up to date and run regularly.
