Hey Darkcloud! Sorry to hear you havent gotten around the chinese prob

I dont have experience in restoring from a different phone with a different firmware; either from a older or newer version, or in your case anything "better" but my hunch is that since the backup contains user inputted files, it may work but it will also still keep the chinese you want to get rid of. I'd be interested to know.

Let's wait for more posts.

Meanwhile, I hope you/we find a solution to your prob...

I am not an expect in this case. But I think if you restore the back, it will restore. The only problem will be the registered applications because of the different emei numbers. Still I don't think the firmware will change.
Thanks

Darkcloud,
The backup on your phone is similar to a backup on your computer.
eg if you back a machine running xp then those files will when they are restored go to the same directories etc ( unless your backup software allows you to change destination directories) The underlying software does not get backed up.
therefore your OS will not be backed up. (unless in windows xp or whatever you include all the system folders as well, you will get 'file in use' error messages when those are attempted to be backed up.

If you go the SE website and use an english version firmware to update your phone what happens?
I assume when you are asked for your organiser version you put the one in that is in your phone and it is chinese, if you were to put in a UK version then hopefully the SE update service will then download to your phone the latest UK firmware.

You can then restore your settings etc from the backup that you made earlier or input them all over again.

I hope this helps, unfortunately I have updated my p910i or I could have given you the previous version number that I had and used that to attempt to do your phone.

Maybe a general message requesting the last but one in this and the technical forum may get a result.

If this doesn't make sense then pm me and I'll try and break it down further.

All the best
