You can send files to another device with ir and connect to pda's or other mobile devices to give them internet access where available.

also BT is only in high-mid-end phones today.
So for the moment IR is needed.

Infra Red functions like a BT, of course minus the proximity/distance of the fones when transferring/transmitting datas!
