Edoom would be a good game for a road trip, play through it once and be done
or there are always the old Lucas Arts SCUMM games like Monkey Island or Day of the Tentacle

Yeah the SCUMM games are perfect. But if there are others in the car, try a movie or multiplayer soldier ants.

lemmings is a good idea...great for acid trips. Seeing all those things walking arounds and dying. You could also look for a psycadelic screen saver, preferably with lots of colours/movment.

Soldier ants gets my vote too, can last ages on Domination mode.
Golf pro is also impressive but the putting is frustratingly hard.
ExplodeArena is quite good but fiddly controls.
Lock'n'Load is a good doom-type game with easier controls than doom, much smaller too.
App I spend most time playing with is PhotoEditor, making dodgy alterations to pics of mates.
