Yes another request for SE to make EDGE in their products thread. Sorry Moderators; but when a search was done, it EDGE was half-hazardly mentioned by various users whom wanted it & why didn't SE make it; just wasn't complete.
Now to the discussion. I wanted to start a new thread on this topic that can centralize the pro's & con's of such an implementation (either to GPRS only or UMTS networks) because I honestly believe there are huge markets along with major reasons.
http://www.3g.co.uk/PR/March2005/1186.htm (EDGE spreading throughout the Americas) dated March 14, 2005. This link lists that EDGE covers 93% or the Canadian population = potentially 250 million people. Futhermore, Mexico also implemented EDGE and available to potential 29 million people; along with another 8 Latin American countries. EDGE is adopted by 154 operators in 87 countries together offering potentially 1 quarter billion customers. I think that is enough reason for EDGE to be implemented, maybe along with European 2100mhz UMTS at least for Europe/Asia/African nations (yes Africa does have EDGE).
On a competitiveness angle SE makes only 4(s710a, 2data cards, z500 - no its not discountinued) products that have EDGE, while Nokia makes (6630/6680/6681/6682/6620/6220/6221) an estimate of 7+. Of those at least 3 of those products offer EDGE & UMTS, not all potential users will stay in their geographical market for the products lifespan, and thus may travel to Canada/USA/Mexico.
Cingular in the US is already testing UMTS for both North America's 850+1900Mhz bands. They have an existing infrastructure for EDGE in the majority of their coverage. SE could manufacture UMTS for the Americas for these existing bands.
Sure EDGE is slower than UMTS however it is cheaper for manufacturers to implement in products & for carriers to deploy. Besides do those of you loving UMTS data speeds, would you prefer your QoS (Quality of Service) to drop to GPRS speeds instead of EDGE? Sure UMTS coverage is extensive in Europe & most of Asia, but don't expect it in the Americas for another 2 years at best for most coverage areas.
Ok I've stated my case, what do you think?

SE has already stated, their main focus is UMTS. Don't think we will ever see to many Edge phones from SE (perhaps one or two more, but that's it).
That's what I think.

India too is a growing EDGE market. Even die hard Se fans would have to buy a nokia if they need to use EDGE services. Thats pathetic.

whizkidd .. 100% agree..
The main thing is that Ericsson is pushing 3G with their HW and have chosen to concentrate only on that .. even in the US.. But I think that SE is shooting them selves in the foot not having at least 2 EDGE phones. (1 mid-end + 1 high-end)

The only currently available EDGE handset is only available in the US. They still sell the S700 here instead of the S710. RIDICULOUS!

actually EDGE is in the US and all phones in americas work on the 850 freq, which is useless here. in UK, the EDGE networks are non existant that SE's primary market is the UK. hence no phones from SE (yet) contain EDGE and the 900 bandwidth in the same phone. which is bad because SE has lots of potential in a market like INDIA and allmost all networks are already EDGE ready. which brings us to the next point. India is gearing up for 3G. and most of the network have done testing except some. and all that needs to be issued are the licenses. LG has already launched 3G phones that also work in the GSM freq. So, does EGE really have a stay in these market? or eill the be thrown out and will India too go for 3G the big way? and there is no point in creating an EDGE phone in 900 bandwidth if nobody is using it. on the other hand, when the 3G networks becomes ready, SE will be ready in ful force and the handsets already in the market. hence giving them a very large advantage when compared to other manufacturers like nokia and moto, who according to my knowledge is yet thinking of whether it should launch 3G phones in India. The latest 3G offering by SE is to launched on april 10th. so according to me, right now the market strategy of SE seems to be correct.

Gov, how many people use the current data services in india? 3G will be prohibitively expensive whenever it is launched here. And i'm not attracted towards it . And by the time 3G is up and running here, 4G will be in its initial stages. The fact is 3G will always be used by a certain section of tech savvy people with filled pockets atleast in the beginning. On the other hand EDGE, is mostly offered at the same rates as gprs here so i think it offers more potential in countries like ours.

whiz, what makes you think it will be prohibiteively expensive? when EDGE was launched, it was pegged at 600p.m. and none of the services in India are that high to be called prohibiteively expensive. what is the costliest call/data rates in India? and as per the situation, even if 3G is launched it will not be very costly as ppl will be unwilling to move over to the newer tech. so to for these services to be more cost effective, they will be reachable to a good percentage of the mobile population, if not all.

A faster than gprs but slower than 3G data service adopted by quite a few 2.5G operators around the world. ;-)
