Ive got an old 350Mhz 64MB RAM pc sat in my cupboard, and want to put an OS on it. I want a free one I can download (i have broadband!) and that WILL run on that low spec machine. All i need it to do is:

Play the odd DVD
Play an Audio CD
Use a Gameboy Colour Emulator
Connect to the net through the O2 Http proxy (Modem over Infrared link)...

think u can do it? lol - any ideas?

Yup! Mandrake Linux:

http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en-gb/

It'll do everything you specified, including the emulator. The learning curve's a bit steep though but it'll keep you occupied!

Other than that, I think you'd have to search for a, ahem, 'shared' version of windows 98SE in .iso format via one of those naughty peer-to-peer applications

Mandrake linux is free! They only ask that you pay to join 'the club', you don't have to pay to get the ISOs to burn onto CDs.

It'll run on that machine fine - I used to run it on an old 486. It helps if you use GNOME instead of KDE for the desktop component, and to turn off all of the special effects rather like you can in XP. The one thing you do need is at least 4 gig of hard drive space and a seperate graphics card.

I'll gladly help you as much as I can, but I'm not a Linux expert by any means

The only thing that really worries me is your IR link to the modem, that could cause no end of problems...

There is this old OS called BEOS or something like that. Its pretty old and can be found at download.com it was made for a system like the spec you have. It is free too, and has been callled a multi media OS with fancy buttons and stuff. Cyco, have you heard about this one? This message was posted from a K500

Well remembered Govi!

I recall hearing about it years ago but never really checked it out. Apparently, you can download it here too:-

I found a pretty good article on it on wikipedia as well:-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BeOS

I might have to dig an old PC out now and have a go! It'll be 'fun' trying to get the drivers, I bet...

I doubt if you'll get a GB emulator for it, never mind the drivers for all your bits and bobs

Mind you, there's no guarantee that Linux will work with them either I suppose

@Govi

No, I've never tried it but if I get bored, I might have to stick it on an old PC just to see what happens
